Saint Victor La Grand' Maison
About This Venue
Candlelit salons and a tree-lined path above the Anglin River
Saint Victor La Grand’ Maison is a privately owned estate in Ingrandes, straddling the borders of Berry and Poitou. Overlooking the Anglin River, the manor is approached via a grand tree-lined bridle path and sits at the summit of a wooded hillside within 14 hectares of preserved parkland and fields. The estate centres around a 16th-century manor, its medieval structure softened by a 19th-century renovation in the Renaissance style and complemented by guard towers and a wing inspired by Viollet-le-Duc.
The Venue History
Late 14th/early 15th century (renovated 1830-1840) · Medieval manor with 19th-century additions
The original building dates to the late 14th or early 15th century, first recorded under Joachim de Louan, Esquire and lord of Grand-Maison, born around 1490. The estate passed through the Barbancois family from 1643, with Silvain de Barbancois (1656-1718) serving as captain in the Royal Piedmont cavalry regiment. Declared national property during the French Revolution in 1793, it changed hands several times before Rene Creuzet des Roches, inventor of an early threshing machine and mayor of Ingrandes, completely renovated the manor between 1830 and 1840, adding a second wing and transforming the vaulted cellar into a terrace. An 1868 history describes it as a charming manor hidden in the grove like a bird's nest, with slate-covered turrets and an elegant belvedere. In 1981 Marie Rouet-Grandclement fell in love with the ruined property and its 400-year-old oak tree overlooking the river Anglin, restoring it over decades before opening it to guests in 2011 with her three children Constance, Paul, and Norma.
