The Venue History

1711-1765 · Neoclassical (first in Burgundy)

Monument Historique

Philibert Verchere, first president of the finances of Dijon, purchased the marquisate of Arcelot in 1711 and built the two wings of the chateau in 1720 along with a hunting lodge and chapel. His grandson, Philibert II Verchere d'Arcelot, president of the parliament of Burgundy, commissioned chief architect Thomas Dumorey of the Ponts et Chaussees to enlarge the residence between 1761 and 1765, making it the first neoclassical construction in the region. The 18th-century historian Courtepee described it as having the most beautiful stucco salon in Burgundy alongside Longecourt. During the Terror of 1792, 11-year-old Louise-Adelaide Verchere walked 30 kilometres round trip to Dijon for five years to defend the family's property rights before the revolutionary court, preserving the estate for future generations. In the early 19th century, Jean-Marie Morel, who designed the gardens at Malmaison for Josephine de Beauharnais, created the landscaped park, which remains one of his best-preserved works. The chateau has stayed in the same family since its construction and features a trompe l'oeil staircase ceiling, the Tsar's bedroom, a picture gallery, and connections to Marshal Lyautey.
