Sophie and Dieter travelled from London to say their vows at a baroque 16th-century wedding chateau near Saint-Tropez, where lavender fields and olive groves framed a celebration rooted in tradition. Captured by Nicolas Elsen, a fine-art wedding photographer based in Provence, every frame balanced the grandeur of the setting with genuine warmth. Their day at Chateau de Robernier is part of a rich collection of destination weddings and celebrations across Provence.

Joana Ronquillo worked Sophie’s hair into a low, twisted updo, pinning each section with steady hands as morning light poured through tall shuttered windows. The Caroline Castigliano gown, a classic column silhouette in ivory duchess satin with a low back and chapel-length train, hung from a carved armoire, waiting. Someone laughed, the tension broke, and Sophie exhaled into the twenty minutes before a wedding that brides remember most clearly.

A Catholic ceremony in front of the chateau’s baroque facade, with a priest whose voice filled the open courtyard and reached the back rows. Sophie walked toward Dieter through warm afternoon light, her ivory gown moving with the slow confidence of good satin. Dieter’s tailored navy suit was precise without being stiff. Vows exchanged, rings placed, the courtyard broke into applause that bounced off stone walls and dissolved into the open Provencal sky.

Nicolas Elsen took Sophie and Dieter through the chateau’s grounds, stone paths, archways, and the long lawn with its view across the valley. There is a photograph of them walking, Dieter’s hand at the small of Sophie’s back, her veil caught mid-lift by the breeze, both half-laughing at something between them. The late-afternoon light over Provencal limestone does things no studio can replicate, and Nicolas knows exactly when to wait for it.

As dusk settled, the reception room was already glowing with candlelight multiplied by stone walls and tall gilt mirrors. Roland Paix’s dinner moved through courses of Provencal cooking, each one sharper and more generous than the last. DJ Amaxxy read the room well, building from dinner background to a dance floor that stayed full until the final hour. Guests had spread across the garden terraces for cocktails beforehand, chilled rose from the local Var appellation in hand.

Ivory linen runners, clusters of blush ranunculus and white garden roses in low terracotta vessels, and tapered ivory candles in brass holders carried the palette through every table. Place settings in cream with fine gold rim held hand-written name cards in italic script. The Caroline Castigliano duchess satin lay across stone alongside a structured bridal veil, satin kitten-heeled mules, and trailing jasmine whose scent was almost visible in the frame.

The approach to Chateau de Robernier does something to guests: the tree-lined path narrows, then opens onto manicured lawns, and suddenly the full baroque facade appears. Stone terraces step down toward gardens, and on a clear morning, the light across pale limestone is almost amber. Nicolas Elsen captured this architecture at its most alive, long shadows, textured walls, the geometry of clipped hedges against wild Provencal hillside.
