White Hydrangeas and Jewish Tradition at Chateau de Varennes, Burgundy

A New York Jewish couple married at Chateau de Varennes in Burgundy with white hydrangeas, duchess satin, and Hebrew vows. Photos by Matthieu Kobi.

By Elena Moretti | Published 6 March 2025

A New York couple brought Jewish tradition to the Burgundy countryside for this celebration at Chateau de Varennes, a grand estate surrounded by vineyards and lavender. Planned by Dorulete Events and photographed by Matthieu Kobi, the day moved from a chuppah on the sunlit lawn to an enchanted candlelit dinner beneath the open sky. On the sunlit lawn, guests settled into rows of cream-cushioned French provincial chairs as the chuppah, draped in white organza and anchored with white hydrangeas, cornflower-blue delphiniums, and trailing greenery, framed the Burgundy sky above. Vows were spoken in English and Hebrew beneath the floral arch, the ancient words carrying new weight against the chateau's honey-coloured stone facade. A breeze brought the scent of lavender from beyond the hedgerow.

Matthieu Kobi followed the couple through the estate as though they had always known it. Vine rows beyond the south lawn provided long, graphic lines in that particular burgundy-brown of early growth, the pair small against the geometry of the landscape. The bride's Jolie Vino Bridal gown, a duchess satin that glowed warm ivory in full sun and cooled to near-white in the stone archway's shade, shifted beautifully with the changing light. A single-strand pearl earring and loosely pinned hair completed the look.

Lilas Wood's florals leaned into a palette of chalk white, sage, and the faintest blush. White ranunculus clustered beside garden roses while trails of smilax and eucalyptus wove down the table runners from Maison Options. Judaica pieces, including the kiddush cup and a modern hand-illustrated ketubah, sat alongside French provincial candlesticks in aged brass. Khadija Fouchard's four-tier cake in ivory buttercream featured pressed sugar flowers in cream and sage, its edges deliberately organic.
