Lavender Fields and Linen Suits: A Provencal Editorial at Bastide des Barattes

Figs split open on a wooden board, a wicker basket spilling with lavender and garden roses, and a long linen-draped table set between the stone walls of a 17th-century bastide and a field of purple in full bloom. When planner Nelly Blay of Agence French Kiss brought her team to Bastide des Barattes in the Luberon last July, she had something specific in mind, not a traditional wedding table, but a Provençal market stall translated into a seated dinner. Cleya Asulon photographed every detail in the long golden light of a summer afternoon.

As the sun dropped towards the Luberon ridge, Provence wedding photographer Cleya Asulon led Sara and Marco into the lavender rows for portraits in the day's last light. The fields were at peak bloom and needed no embellishment as a backdrop. Sara wore a fluid off-shoulder gown with a high slit from La Petite Main. Marco, a relaxed linen suit by Blandin & Delloye in warm beige. A wide-brimmed summer hat completed the look before giving way to candid frames of the two together.

Dinner was served at the long table opposite La Grange, the bastide's soundproof barn glowing amber behind. The market concept carried through to service, platters of seasonal salad, cheese, and roasted vegetables brought out with the same spirit of abundance as the decor. Sara and Marco settled into their chairs and raised glasses of champagne. The cake from Lucy's Pâtisserie, tiered and crowned with fresh figs, peaches, and garden blooms, was cut to laughter and a spontaneous embrace. One frame, captured in black and white, holds the quiet intimacy of that moment.

Every element on the table followed the logic of a market basket, seasonal, local, and grounded in its own imperfection. Stoneware plates sat beneath linen napkins embroidered at the edge. Wicker baskets overflowed with market vegetables and bread alongside loose floral compositions by Pierre Henry Fleuriste from Vaison-la-Romaine. Terracotta-toned lamps and short pillar candles cast warm light across the setting as golden hour approached. Graphic place cards from Kokuyo punctuated each seat, while natural wood chairs from Oravis gave the table its unhurried, grounded character.

A collection of market-morning moments laid flat: Sara's pointed shoes on a vintage chair, personalised cards scattered with dried fruits and perfume in the grass, the woven basket bouquet held loose in hand. These frames speak to the bricolage spirit of the whole shoot, nothing coordinated for its own sake, but everything chosen for texture, meaning, or pleasure.

Bastide des Barattes sits between Cavaillon and L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue at the foot of the Luberon, on a one-hectare estate referenced as far back as the 16th century. Originally a magnanery, the property was restored in the 1980s into the 900m² bastide it is today. The lavender field flanking the estate is at its most vivid from mid-June through September, offering one of the most striking ceremony backdrops in Provence.
