Patricia and Andrew chose Chateau Challain, a luxury fairy tale chateau in the Loire Valley for their three-day celebration of vintage travel and modern romance. Styled by in-house planner Cynthia Nicholson and captured by Janis Ratnieks, their autumn weekend in the Loire Valley unfolded like a storybook of turrets, fireworks, and heartfelt trust.

Ceremony

A couple shares a dip kiss on a paved garden pathway at night while a fireworks display bursts overhead in gold and white. The groom, dressed in a dark navy suit, dips the bride, who is wearing a white ballgown. The pathway is flanked by trimmed boxwood hedges and large crystal candelabras holding multiple lit white candles, casting warm light along the aisle. In the background, a white pavilion or gazebo decorated with white floral arrangements and draping curtains anchors the scene, with two white lounge sofas positioned on either side. The decor palette is classic and formal, combining white florals, crystal candelabras, and candlelight. Wide portrait shot with dramatic nighttime lighting from the fireworks and candles combined.
The bride and groom share their first kiss during an outdoor ceremony, framed by a draped altar structure adorned with cream and champagne-toned fabric panels tied back with tassel details and hanging crystal strands. A beaded chandelier hangs from the center of the canopy overhead, adding a classic decorative touch. The bride wears a fitted lace gown with a thin veil, while the groom wears a navy blue suit with a boutonniere; an officiant is partially visible standing behind them. The shot is a medium portrait taken straight-on, with a garden and warm late-afternoon light visible in the background through the draping.
An outdoor wedding ceremony taking place directly in front of a large French Gothic-style château with white stone façade, pointed turrets, and ornate architectural detailing. The couple stands at the far end of a white aisle runner, flanked by tall silver candelabras holding blue and white floral arrangements, with neatly trimmed hedgerows lining the path. The bride wears a full-length white gown and the groom is in a dark suit; approximately 10–15 guests are visible on either side of the aisle, some holding cameras or phones. The shot is a wide-angle perspective taken from behind the guests, emphasizing the symmetry of the aisle and the full scale of the château as a backdrop. Potential venue feature image.
A bridal party portrait taken outdoors in a formal garden setting, with the group posed in front of an ornate wrought-iron gazebo ceremony structure. The gazebo is decorated with white draping, hanging crystal or lantern accents, and a crown of white floral arrangements at the top. The groom stands at center in a black suit with a light pink tie, flanked by groomsmen in navy blue suits with burgundy ties and pocket squares. Four bridesmaids stand to the left wearing floor-length burgundy halter-neck gowns and carrying small bouquets. Additional groomsmen and attendants flank both sides, totaling approximately 10-12 people in the wedding party. The wide-shot composition captures the full gazebo structure and the surrounding manicured garden with trimmed topiary shrubs and low flowering plants in the foreground.

The ceremony took place within the chateau's Gothic turret-framed setting, where stone archways and stained glass filtered soft light over the couple's vows. Patricia and Andrew exchanged promises surrounded by floral arrangements in gold and candlelight tones. The setting's dramatic architecture gave the ceremony a gravity that matched the couple's romantic, vintage travel theme.

Reception

A bride and groom share a kiss at their sweetheart table during a wedding reception inside a grand historic interior space featuring ornate dark wood carved paneling, a large decorative mantelpiece with an antique clock, and tall candelabras with cream-colored shades. The groom wears a navy suit with a burgundy tie, and the bride wears a lace sleeveless gown with a white hair accessory; both hold glasses of red wine. The table is lit by tall white taper candles and decorated with a low floral arrangement of blush and peach roses with trailing greenery and eucalyptus, alongside gold tableware. Large stone urns with tropical palm fronds flank the couple on either side, contributing to a dark, moody, classic aesthetic. This is a medium portrait-style shot taken at table level.
A wide shot of an indoor wedding reception room set up for a seated dinner, likely inside a historic chateau or manor house. The room features dark wood wall paneling, a coffered wooden ceiling, tall arched windows with gold-yellow drape valances, and warm amber lighting from wall sconces and chandeliers. Multiple round and rectangular tables are dressed in gold and ivory lace-style linens, set with crystal glassware, candles, and floral centerpieces incorporating greenery, palm fronds, and small white blooms. A tall ornate gold candelabra serves as a central decorative element, adorned with trailing greenery and white flowers. The decor palette is warm gold, ivory, and earthy green, with a classic, vintage-inspired styling theme. Approximately four to six tables are visible, each with chairs dressed in ivory or white chair covers. A large ornate mirror and carved wooden furniture pieces are visible in the background. Potential venue feature image.
Close-up detail shots of indoor wedding reception table centerpieces styled with a vintage travel theme. The centerpieces feature open dark leather suitcases filled with coral and salmon roses, green hydrangeas, and eucalyptus foliage, accented with a small vintage film camera, a gold-framed table name card reading 'La Habana,' and gold mercury glass votive candle holders. Loose coral roses are scattered on the champagne-colored table linen around the suitcase base. The table settings include cut-crystal glassware in multiple sizes, white ceramic plates, and gold-toned bottle accents. The two-image composite shows the same tablescape from slightly different angles — one tighter close-up and one wider view showing the full table arrangement with guests' chairs visible in the background of an indoor reception space with warm candlelight.
A six-image collage from a chateau wedding in France. Top left: a full-length portrait of the bride in a white fitted lace gown with a low V-back and train, shot from behind as she stands in open double doors looking out toward a grand Gothic-style chateau along a gravel driveway — Potential venue feature image. Top right: a group portrait of approximately eight people including the bridal party, posing in front of an ornate iron and white fabric gazebo in a formal garden; bridesmaids wear deep burgundy dresses and groomsmen wear navy suits. Middle right: a warm-toned reception detail close-up showing brass candelabras with lotus-shaped amber candle holders, burning candles, a vintage mirror, a decorative fan, a small book labeled 'Paris,' and a floral arrangement of coral, blush, and ivory blooms — decor style is vintage Parisian. Middle left: a wide exterior shot of the full Gothic-revival chateau with turrets under an overcast sky — Potential venue feature image. Bottom left: a couple portrait with the bride in her white lace gown and the groom in a navy suit embracing in front of the chateau facade in soft natural light. Bottom right: a close-up detail of a pair of ivory peep-toe heeled bridal shoes resting on an ornate dark velvet embroidered chair.

The sweetheart table shimmered with candlelight and soft metallic accents as guests gathered for a reception themed around vintage travel and discovery. Miniature suitcases, maps, and heirloom-style globes served as centrepieces, each table offering its own story. The celebration built toward a fireworks finale that lit up the chateau's parkland and sealed the evening in style.

Flat Lays

Close-up detail shot of a pair of bridal shoes displayed on an antique upholstered chair. The shoes are ivory peep-toe platform heels with a delicate lace or floral brocade fabric overlay and nude leather lining. They are placed on the blue-grey embroidered fabric seat of an ornate wooden chair with carved detailing visible in the background, suggesting a classic or vintage interior setting. The styling is classic and bridal, with the decorative chair serving as an intentional prop to complement the shoe design.
A diptych image showing two getting-ready scenes. On the left, a close-up detail shot of a bridal bouquet featuring coral and blush garden roses, ivory peonies or ranunculus, and silver-toned dusty miller foliage, accented with decorative silver feather and jeweled brooches, wrapped in white ribbon. On the right, a wide interior shot of two women in a ornately decorated room with toile wallpaper, tall windows with draped curtains, and antique furnishings — one woman wears a floral kimono-style robe and the other wears a white short robe, suggesting a bridal preparation scene; a third person is partially visible in the background. The room has the appearance of a French chateau or manor house interior. The overall styling theme is classic with vintage and art deco accents.
A close-up flat lay detail shot of a pair of silver strappy heeled sandals by Sam Edelman, placed on a dark herringbone parquet wood floor. The shoes are shown with ankle straps unwound, revealing the brand name written in cursive script on the tan insoles. The metallic silver straps catch the light against the warm tones of the wooden floor.
Close-up detail shot of a dark matte black gift box containing flat fold-up ballet slippers, a common wedding favor for guests to wear during the reception dancing. The inside lid of the box is printed in white text with the phrase 'SLIP OFF YOUR HEELS AND DANCE!' along with a small illustrated ballet slipper icon. The slippers inside appear to be dark bronze or black in color, individually packaged with brown tissue or satin wrapping dividers. The packaging design is modern and minimal, suggesting an intentional guest comfort favor detail.

Detail shots revealed the depth of the vintage travel concept: miniature suitcases and brass compasses rested alongside hand-lettered table names and seating cards. Metallic accents, ribbon-tied favour boxes, and gilded candle holders dressed the tables against the chateau's ornate interiors. Each vignette felt like a chapter from the couple's own travel story.

More from the Day

A two-panel detail shot of cocktail hour food and drink at a wedding reception. The top image shows rows of champagne flutes filled with golden sparkling wine arranged on a polished silver tray, backlit by a large window with architectural ironwork visible in the background. The bottom image shows a gold ornate tray presenting an assortment of canapés, including fresh fig slices on dark bread, small tartlets topped with glazed fruit in yellow and red, and individual clear plastic cups filled with a grain or rice-based salad garnished with edible purple flowers and colorful decorative picks in green, yellow, and pink.
A getting-ready scene captured indoors at what appears to be a chateau, showing three women in matching pink floral satin robes gathered at a large, ornate double-casement window with dark wood frames and decorative ironwork detailing. Two of the women stand at the open window looking out over the estate grounds, with one raising her hand, while a third sits in the foreground. A white wedding dress is partially visible in the lower right corner of the frame. The room features patterned wallpaper, a heavy sage-green curtain with tassel trim, and warm natural light streaming through the window. The composition is a medium portrait shot taken from behind the subjects, with strong backlighting creating a silhouette effect against the bright exterior view.

A bride and an older gentleman, likely her father, walk together through formal château gardens in a medium-wide shot taken from behind. The bride wears a white lace gown with a long cathedral-length veil and a floral hair accessory, while her companion wears a grey suit. The setting is the grounds of a large French château with ornate Renaissance-style stone architecture visible on the right side of the frame, and the formal garden features clipped hedgerows, lavender plantings, and gravel pathways. Warm late-afternoon golden light creates a lens flare effect and casts long shadows across the scene. Potential venue feature image.
