Candlelit Linen and Hilltop Views at Chateau de Maulmont, Auvergne

Marianne and Gaelan’s wedding at Chateau de Maulmont, Auvergne, with hilltop views, cheese boards, and candlelit linen tables. 38 photos.

By Elena Moretti | Published 5 February 2024

Marianne and Gaelan gathered family from Australia and the Netherlands for a relaxed weekend at Chateau de Maulmont, a hilltop wedding estate near Lyon where every moment unfolded within one address. The terracotta towers and rolling hills of this grand countryside wedding chateau in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes set the stage for candlelit dining, local cheeses, and a macaron-tower finale.

Getting Ready

Marianne dressed in a warmly lit room with ochre walls and burgundy curtains, fastening embellished ankle-strap shoes before slipping into a fitted gown with a deep back. A close-up caught her hands adjusting the bodice in front of a tall gilt mirror. Down the corridor, four flower girls in white gathered by a multi-pane French window, pressing their faces against the glass as light streamed across the stone floor.

Ceremony

The bride and groom walk hand-in-hand down the aisle following the ceremony, surrounded by two young flower girls. The setting appears to be an outdoor or semi-covered terrace of a grand stone building with arched architectural details visible in the background. The bride wears an off-the-shoulder white gown with floral lace appliqué overlay on a nude base, and carries a loose bouquet of cream and blush flowers including what appear to be ranunculus and greenery; the groom wears a sand-colored linen suit with a light blue shirt and a small blush boutonniere. One flower girl wears a mint green dress with a white floral crown, while a younger flower girl wears a white textured tulle dress. The aisle is lined with arrangements of pampas grass, white blooms, and dried botanicals, contributing to a relaxed, boho-inspired aesthetic. The overall color palette is neutral and warm — ivory, sand, blush, and mint. Medium portrait-style shot with guests visible and slightly blurred in the background.

A white-canopied marquee opened on one side to the hillside panorama, the aisle lined with white gladioli and soft greenery leading to a simple altar. A family friend led the vows as birdsong and a light breeze moved through the open structure. Guests sat on white chairs beneath the canopy, the rolling hills visible beyond the final row.

Marianne and Gaelan walked along the gravel driveway leading up to the chateau, pausing for a kiss framed by the terracotta and dark-brick facade. Indoor portraits placed them on an antique settee in the grand hallway, the black-and-white frames drawing on the pattern of the stone balustrade. A quiet first-look moment earlier in the day had caught Gaelan turning to see Marianne silhouetted in a doorway.

Reception

Dinner unfolded inside the chateau beneath chandeliers, with roasted herbs and butter scenting the candlelit room. A selection of Auvergne cheeses arrived on a wooden board between courses, drawing murmurs of approval from both Australian and Dutch guests. A macaron cake brought everyone forward for photographs and a final champagne toast before the dance floor opened and laughter drifted through the open terrace doors.

Design and Details

Illustrated seating chart on easel with pampas grass and white floral arrangements in stone-arched venue
Close-up of white gladioli with pampas grass dusty mauve plumes and blush roses
An empty outdoor ceremony setup photographed from a wide-angle elevated perspective, showing a white marquee tent erected on a wooden deck terrace against the facade of a château with classical stone columns and large arched wooden doors. Rows of white folding chairs are arranged on either side of a cream fabric aisle runner, with floral arrangements placed along the aisle featuring pampas grass, blush and white blooms, and dried botanicals in a boho-natural style. Two gold chandeliers hang from the white tent ceiling, and the marquee posts are draped with green foliage garlands and sheer white curtains. A triangular wooden arch is partially visible in the foreground left. The overall decor palette is ivory, white, and natural beige with greenery accents. Potential venue feature image.
Close-up detail shot of a deep burgundy entrance mat with gold script lettering reading 'Château de Mauli...' (partially obscured) and a partial gold fleur-de-lis motif, positioned on cream-toned stone tile flooring. The image is shot at an angle with a strong diagonal shadow cutting across the lower half of the frame, creating high contrast between the lit and unlit portions of the mat. No people are visible. The shot serves as a venue identifier detail, typical of arrival or establishing imagery.

White gladioli anchored the floral arrangements alongside roses and trailing eucalyptus, set in low compositions along the linen-dressed reception tables. A seating chart on a wooden easel stood in the grand interior hall beneath a chandelier, handwritten cards pinned in neat rows. Taper candles in brass holders lined the centre of each table, their flames doubling in the polished glassware.

Venue

Gothic-Revival chateau with conical turrets, pointed arches, and geometric boxwood parterre in foreground
Curved wooden staircase with turned spindle balusters and framed winter landscape print on white wall
A wide-shot exterior photograph of a château-style castle venue taken at night, with no people visible. The building features a round turret tower on the left, a pointed Gothic arch entrance gate at the center, decorative brickwork facades, multiple chimneys, and smaller turret elements along the roofline. The structure is illuminated by warm amber uplighting that highlights the architectural details of the entrance and tower, while pathway lights guide a gravel driveway toward the main gate. A half-timbered outbuilding is visible to the left, also lit from below. The surrounding grounds are dark with large mature trees framing the composition on both sides. Potential venue feature image.
A moody interior shot of a formal dining room viewed through a partially open dark wooden door, with no people present. The room features a gold and crystal chandelier hanging from a dark wood-beamed ceiling, casting warm light in an otherwise deeply shadowed space. A long dining table is set with a white tablecloth and surrounded by Louis XVI-style medallion chairs with white painted frames and dusty rose pink upholstered seats and backs. The herringbone parquet floor and dark wood-paneled walls suggest a classic French château interior. Wide shot framed as a peek through the doorway, with strong contrast between the deep foreground shadow and the softly lit room beyond. Potential venue feature image.

Chateau de Maulmont commanded a hilltop with terracotta and dark-brick patterning across its Gothic-revival facade. Clipped hedges, gravel paths, and a wide stone terrace framed the panoramic view of the Auvergne countryside. Inside, an ornate staircase with wrought-iron balusters connected generous reception rooms to the upper floors, every corridor carrying the quiet warmth of red patterned carpets and gilt-framed mirrors.
