A Fairytale Two-Part Wedding at Chateau Challain, Loire Valley

Alison and Eoin's fairytale wedding at Chateau Challain in the Loire Valley featured a Louise Kennedy gown, outdoor vows, and vintage-inspired styling.

By Elena Moretti | Published 3 June 2012

Alison and Eoin, both physicians from Dublin, brought their love story from Central Park to Chateau Challain, a grand neo-Gothic castle in the western Loire Valley for a fairytale celebration among turrets and sweeping grounds. Arranged by Cynthia Nicholson of Chateau Challain, their two-part wedding spanned New York and the Loire Region.

Getting Ready

The bride is seated at a dark wooden table signing the wedding register, photographed from behind in a medium portrait shot. She is wearing an ivory wedding dress with a white faux fur stole over her shoulders and has her red hair styled in an updo with small floral hair accessories. A woman in a navy blue sequined-top bridesmaid dress stands beside her, partially cropped at the frame's edge. On the table sits a silver candelabra with crystal droplet details. The interior setting features dark wood paneling, suggesting a historic manor or chateau, and the overall decor palette leans classic and wintry.
A getting-ready portrait of a bride with red hair, wearing a white lace wedding dress and a white feather or marabou stole draped over her shoulders, paired with a simple white headband. She is smiling and looking downward while adjusting the stole. The setting is an ornate indoor room with deep red damask wallpaper, a carved wooden door, and a gold-framed mirror visible in the background, suggesting a classic chateau or historic venue interior. The shot is a close-up portrait with a shallow depth of field, giving the background a soft blur, and the overall styling leans toward a vintage or classic aesthetic.
A couple kisses outdoors at night during a fireworks display, with large red and orange fireworks bursting in the dark sky directly behind them. The groom wears a dark suit and the bride wears a cream or ivory wrap or shawl with white fur trim over her wedding attire, with her auburn hair styled up. Two female guests are visible on either side — one on the left photographing the moment with a small camera or phone, and one on the right with an updo hairstyle wearing a light linen jacket. The shot is a close portrait-style image taken from behind and slightly to the side, with the fireworks serving as a dramatic backlit backdrop.

The bride has auburn hair styled into a loose, romantic chignon adorned with small white flower petals or floral hair accessories tucked throughout the bun. She appears to be wearing a strapless or off-shoulder gown, with her bare back visible. The image is a detail/portrait shot with a dark wooden backdrop, creating warm, moody contrast against her hair and skin tone.

Alison prepared in the chateau's ornate bridal suite, where morning light played across carved stone and gilded mirrors. Her Louise Kennedy gown, with its refined silhouette and vintage-inspired detailing, set a tone of quiet grandeur that matched the neo-Gothic interiors. The bridal team gathered around her as final touches were made with calm precision.

Ceremony

The bride and groom are signing the marriage register during an indoor ceremony, both leaning over an open registry book on a wooden table. The groom wears a dark charcoal suit and holds a pen, while the bride, a redhead with her hair pinned up, wears a lace-bodice dress with a white fur wrap over her shoulders and smiles down at the document. A third person, partially visible in the background, wears a cobalt blue dress and appears to be a witness or officiant. To the right of the frame, a decorative crystal or acrylic beaded chandelier or ornament is partially visible, adding a formal interior detail to the scene. The image is a close-up portrait shot with warm, window-sourced natural light.
A cellist performs during what appears to be an outdoor wedding ceremony, seated beneath a covered structure with gold-painted columns draped with white ribbon. The musician, a man wearing glasses and a light grey sweater, plays while reading from sheet music on a wooden music stand. In the foreground, an ornate dark wood carved table holds a tall gold candelabra with a white taper candle, and large gold urn arrangements filled with white florals — likely white hydrangeas and small white blooms — are visible to the left. The shot is a medium portrait framing the musician between the decorative columns, with a garden visible in the soft-focus background, giving the setting a classic, formal outdoor ceremony aesthetic.
A small outdoor wedding ceremony taking place under a decorative stone pergola or gazebo structure with ornate columns painted in a weathered sage-green color. Four people are present: a groom in a dark navy suit with a white rose boutonniere and grey tie, a bride with red hair wearing a white coat and holding a bouquet of yellow and white flowers, an officiant in a dark suit holding an open binder or ceremony booklet, and a male witness or best man in a dark suit with a light blue tie. The bride and groom are facing each other during what appears to be the vow exchange, with the officiant reading between them. The photograph is a medium-wide shot taken from the side of the pergola, capturing all four participants in a candid, documentary style.
Wedding guests are seated outdoors in a formal garden during what appears to be a cocktail hour or outdoor ceremony, with a large yellow market umbrella and a smaller ivory parasol providing shade. In the foreground, a man in a dark suit and a woman in a white/cream coat sit together conversing, with at least one other guest partially visible to the right. The setting is the formal garden grounds of a grand French Loire Valley-style chateau featuring multiple pointed slate turrets, ornate Gothic-Renaissance architecture, and a white stone facade directly behind the guests. The shot is a medium wide portrait framing the guests with the chateau prominently filling the background. Potential venue feature image.

Despite unpredictable weather, the outdoor ceremony went ahead on the chateau's sweeping lawns, a testament to the couple's calm and joy. The styling blended vintage and shabby chic touches, from lace and pearls to delicate pastels that softened the Gothic grandeur. Vows were exchanged with genuine emotion as guests gathered beneath the turrets of Chateau Challain.

Bridal Portraits

A couple shares a kiss while seated in a white and red horse-drawn carriage pulled by a black horse, in what appears to be an urban park setting with bare winter trees and a stone building visible in the background. The carriage features red upholstered seating and red trim with white spoke wheels, and is decorated with red and cream floral arrangements. The bride is wearing a white dress and the groom is in a dark suit. The shot is a wide portrait capturing the full carriage from the side.
A couple portrait taken outdoors on the grounds of a French chateau, with the white multi-story chateau building reflected in a large ornamental lake in the background. The bride has short red hair and wears a sleeveless white fitted gown, holding a compact bouquet of white flowers including what appear to be peonies or ranunculus. The groom wears a black morning coat with grey striped trousers, a white waistcoat, and a white boutonniere. He stands behind the bride with his arm around her as both look downward. The styling is classic and formal. The shot is a medium portrait framed horizontally, with the lake and chateau providing a distant backdrop. Potential venue feature image.
A bride and groom walk together along a garden path in front of a large white French chateau with dark slate-roofed turrets and ornate Gothic-Renaissance architecture. The bride wears a long-sleeved, fitted white lace gown and carries a bridal bouquet, while the groom is dressed in a dark suit with a white shirt. The shot is taken from a medium-wide angle at ground level, with a flowering shrub with white blooms in the soft foreground creating natural depth. The overcast sky and manicured box hedges frame the couple as they move toward the camera. Potential venue feature image.
A sepia-toned portrait of a bride and groom sharing a close moment on the stone entrance steps of a French chateau, facing each other with the groom leaning in toward the bride. The bride wears a fitted, long white gown and holds a small bouquet, while the groom wears a dark suit. The chateau facade behind them features ornate Gothic-style carved stonework, arched windows, and a large dark wooden double door flanked by decorative stone urns with floral arrangements and trimmed topiary. The composition is a full-length portrait framing the couple against the grand architectural backdrop. Potential venue feature image.

Portraits captured Alison against Chateau Challain's turrets, stone archways, and formal gardens, her Louise Kennedy gown catching the afternoon light. The neo-Gothic architecture provided dramatic compositional frames, from spiral staircases to iron-railed balconies overlooking the grounds. Each image balanced the scale of the castle with the intimate warmth of the bride's expression.

Reception

Close-up detail shot of a three-tiered white wedding cake decorated with white fondant scrollwork, white roses, and small green berries, displayed on a gold cake stand. The cake is flanked by crystal candelabras holding lit yellow taper candles, and two large round floral arrangements of cream and white roses on tall gold pedestals. Small arrangements of green moss or foliage are positioned at the base of the display. The backdrop features an ornate carved stone or plaster mantelpiece with decorative molding and a green-and-gold painted interior, suggesting a chateau or historic reception venue interior. The overall decor palette is white, cream, gold, and green with a classic, formal styling.
A nighttime fireworks display captured from across a lake, with a large illuminated chateau visible in the background. A single firework bursts in pink and white tones above the building, with the explosion and the lit facade of the chateau reflected in the still water below. The surrounding grounds are dark, with trees framing either side of the composition. The shot is a wide vertical frame emphasizing the symmetry between the firework and its reflection. Potential venue feature image.
Close-up detail shot of a wedding reception table centerpiece set in a dimly lit indoor venue, likely a historic chateau or manor hall. The centerpiece features a dense arrangement of green sedum or similar textural greenery in an ornate antique gold urn with decorative relief detailing. The table is dressed with a white linen base and a sage green embroidered or quilted table runner, with several small crystal and gold votive candle holders casting warm candlelight around the centerpiece. The overall decor palette is gold, sage green, and ivory, suggesting a classic, old-world styling theme with an emphasis on rich metallics and lush greenery rather than traditional floral blooms.
A couple shares a slow dance or intimate moment during an indoor evening reception, with the bride in a white gown and the groom in a dark suit with white bow tie visible in the right foreground. Several guests, including a woman in a strapless dark gown and a man in a tuxedo, stand and converse in the background alongside another guest in a purple dress. The foreground features a richly styled tablescape with multiple lit candles on crystal and silver candelabras, small arrangements of what appear to be white hydrangeas and baby's breath in silver urns, and glassware, all creating warm candlelight throughout the dark interior space. The overall decor palette is classic and formal with silver, crystal, and white floral tones, shot in a medium-depth portrait style with shallow focus that keeps the table decor sharp and the background softly blurred.

Dinner filled the chateau's grand dining room with candlelight, laughter, and heartfelt toasts. Tables dressed with garden roses, vintage linens, and flickering tapers created an atmosphere of intimate grandeur. The evening built from seated elegance to spirited dancing, with guests celebrating beneath the vaulted ceilings of Chateau Challain.

Design and Details

This image does not appear to be a wedding photograph. It shows two young women sitting on large rocks outdoors, playing stringed instruments — one holds a small ukulele and the other plays an acoustic guitar with a decorative reddish finish. Both are dressed in casual everyday clothing including jeans, dark jackets, and boots, with no visible wedding attire, floral arrangements, or wedding-related decor. This image does not appear suitable for a French wedding content library.
A split close-up detail shot showing two bridal accessories against a richly upholstered deep red background. On the left, a pair of white satin peep-toe slingback heels with bow detail are hung from a black chandelier adorned with cream wooden bead strands. On the right, a bridal bouquet composed of white peonies, white calla lilies, and small white wax flowers with green foliage rests on a red patterned fabric surface; the stems are wrapped in a striped ribbon in muted blue and grey tones, finished with a loose blush pink organza ribbon. The styling has a classic, formal feel with rich jewel-toned surroundings contrasting the white florals and ivory shoes.
Detail shot of a traditional horse-drawn carriage styled in white and red, with the folded convertible hood and upholstered red leather seating visible. The carriage features large white-painted spoked wheels with decorative scrollwork on the body. No people are visible in the frame. The composition is a close-up side angle focusing on the wheel and carriage body, likely used as a wedding transport detail shot.

The design blended vintage charm with French elegance, layering lace, pearls, and soft pastel tones across the chateau's historic rooms. Shabby chic accents softened the Gothic architecture, creating an atmosphere that felt romantic without being formal. Floral arrangements of garden roses and trailing greenery echoed the estate's park-like grounds.

Flat Lays

A bride stands centered in the open double doorway of what appears to be a French chateau or manor house, framed by deep plum-purple wooden doors. She wears a fitted, floor-length ivory lace gown with a V-neckline and holds a tight round bouquet of white flowers, likely white calla lilies and roses. Her red hair is styled up and she wears drop earrings; behind her, the interior reveals dark wood paneling, a wrought-iron candle chandelier, animal horn mounts on the wall, and a tall vase of loosely arranged white and green florals. This is a full-length portrait shot taken from slightly outside the doorway, with natural light illuminating the bride against the darker interior.
Close-up detail shot of a wedding reception table setting indoors against a dark background. The place setting features a gold charger plate topped with a folded ivory linen napkin and a green folded menu card or place card holder secured with a silver buckle detail. Multiple crystal glasses are arranged to the right, and silver flatware is placed on both sides. A green table runner runs down the center of the white linen tablecloth. In the background, a tall white pedestal stand holds a dense pomander-style centerpiece of white roses, flanked by silver candle holders with pillar candles and additional crystal glassware, suggesting a classic, formal reception decor palette of white, gold, green, and silver.
Close-up detail shot of wedding cocktail hour canapés arranged on a rectangular gold/bronze tray placed on a dark wood surface. A row of small clear shot glasses filled with layered appetizers — featuring a yellow-green sauce topped with dark herb mixtures — are each fitted with small clear spoons. To the right, a small hinged-lid glass jar contains a red and pink chopped filling, consistent with a tartare or salsa-style amuse-bouche. The background is softly blurred, with additional food presentations visible out of focus, suggesting an indoor catering or reception setting.
A wedding reception tablescape shot in a classic, formal indoor setting with dark carved wood paneling and an ornate fireplace visible in the background. The long dining table is dressed with a cream linen base and a green runner, set with crystal glassware, gold-toned charger plates, green folded napkins, and individual bread rolls. Tall gold candelabra centerpieces hold large spherical arrangements of cream/ivory roses, flanked by pillar candles on gold candlesticks and small gold votive tea light holders arranged on a decorative gold tray. The overall decor palette is gold, cream, and green with a classic, formal aesthetic. Wide shot capturing the full length of the table from a slightly elevated angle. Potential venue feature image.

Stationery details featured soft pastel tones and calligraphed text on textured paper, arranged alongside pearl accessories, lace trim, and delicate floral sprigs. The flat lay compositions captured the wedding's blend of vintage elegance and French romance. Ring shots and invitation suites completed the visual story with careful, considered arrangement.

More from the Day

A cocktail hour drinks station set up indoors, featuring approximately 20–25 champagne flutes filled with a bright green liquid arranged in rows on a table draped with an olive green cloth. Two staff members dressed in black are visible in the background — one holding a dark green bottle and standing near a silver ice bucket on the right, and another with their back turned on the left. A floral arrangement of green globe thistle or similar round green blooms in a white vase is visible in the background, reinforcing the all-green color palette. The shot is taken from a low angle at table level, giving a close-up detail perspective of the glassware display.
A cocktail hour canapé display table set up indoors in what appears to be a wood-paneled room with dark mahogany wainscoting and a large window in the background. The dark wooden table holds multiple trays and tiered stands of bite-sized appetizers and canapés, including items with pink, green, and red garnishes. The table is styled with a tall white ceramic vase holding white stock flowers on the left, and two small conical boxwood topiary trees in square containers flanking the display. The overall decor palette is classic and formal, using white florals and structured greenery. Close-up wide shot taken at table level.
A black-and-white portrait of a couple standing close together and facing each other in front of a large floor-to-ceiling window, with a sweeping urban skyline visible in the background suggesting a high-rise venue in a major city. The woman wears a light-colored jacket or blazer and smiles up at the man, who is dressed in a dark suit. Bokeh city lights are visible along the street below, adding depth to the background. The image is a medium close-up shot with a slightly soft focus, taken from a low angle with strong contrast between the couple in the foreground and the bright window behind them.
